I really think that the written word is what defines us as superior creatures to all the other creatures on earth. Man is characterized by a number of things. One of them is he’s the only animal that knows he’s gonna die someday. And knowing that, he also has an obligation to make the most of whatever time he has. Making the most of it is enourmously assisted by reading. By learning about the world, learning about the past and the present and gaining an ability to look the future by reading.

By seeking the inwardness which is in all things. In music, in poetry, in the natural world of beauty and in the small ordinary things of life there is a deep indwelling presence that makes them extraordinary.
